The
single room that we have received the most requests to do custom finishes in,
is, not surprisingly, the dining room.
Most
of our clients do a fair bit of socializing. They like to entertain, and a
beautiful dining room creates an ambience all its own. A wall finish tends to
be a topic of conversation at the meal. Our clients tell us about more
compliments on our dining room finishes than any other room we do. No
room gives more bang for the buck.
Our
most recent project was again in Ruby Hill. Once a year they put on a gala
fundraiser. We agreed to contribute a wall finish to their charity auction.
Our clients in this case were charming people who had a dining room
they wanted to transform. It had a finish on the ceiling and nice furniture,
but the walls were suffering from the malady known as off-white. The dining
room opened out into the other areas of the house so we had to create a finish
that would create its own space while still working with the other
areas. We used a Mandarin Red with some iridescence overlaid for the walls,
which we felt would also tie better with the ceiling, which had some existing
faux. Red is by far the most popular color as regards dining rooms. The depth
of it tends to demark the space and gives a lot of warmth. As an added touch
we took a gold plaster and applied a very thin layer over the red to give a
little more iridescence and slightly aged look. Our clients were
thrilled with the result.
We also just completed a dining room in the East Bay where the walls were done in an eggplant colored plaster and the ceiling in gold and white iridescent plaster in multiple layering. Quite striking. Dark warm walls for a dining room tend to really give the feel of being in a completely different space when you walk into the room. We always offset this with a light warm ceiling, this opens it up and throws light around.
Look through our website for many other examples of dining rooms in both dark and light finishes.
