One Special Room

I grew up as an east coast kid in a predominantly Italian neighborhood. One of the trademarks of Italian homes at that time (the 60’s) was the front sitting room. Each house had one room with the best furniture and furnishings that could be afforded, lace doilies and slipcovers and plastic on everything. You were never allowed into this room as it was for company. Even if the rest of the house was overrun with noisy messy Italian kids and husbands, this was the one room that your mother or grandmother took pride in creating and it was off limits to the rest of the primates living in the house. It was that one special room.

Fast forward to today.  We work in lots of very expensive homes doing custom wall finishes. While most of our projects include more than one space in a home, the idea of “the special room” is very much incorporated into what we do.

There are many outfits that do wall finishes and plasters, but what separates the high-end artisans from the pack is the custom nature of their work. You will find a lot of people who will offer “Venetian Plaster” showing a color chart much like a paint chart with a dozen or so colors as your only choices. There is nothing particularly wrong with that. But for a Molto Bene custom job, we utilize about 8 or 9 different plasters, along with many different techniques that create many different finishes. We’ll adjust colors on the job as needed, if that is what is needed to create that special room.

The way we approach a job is to find out what each room is going to be used for, look at the furniture and furnishings, and find out the overall feel the client is looking to create. From there we show many samples of the various plasters we use, to get some ideas of likes and dislikes on this as well as color preferences that will also harmoniously connect with the existing colors and textures and architecture. Finally, we create custom sample boards for the project so the client can get a good feel for what to expect.

So if a client has a master bedroom they want to look like a bed and breakfast that they stayed at in Florence, then that is what we will create.  If a client has a condo in a refurbished art deco building in Chicago and wants spaces that accentuate that art deco feel, that is what we do. Even in doing multiple rooms or a whole house, we look at each space as its own and seek to make that space special. Included here are a few pictures of  “special rooms” we created, with more pictures at our website.

In essence, we specialize in creating special rooms.  (However you have to provide the lace doilies, slipcovers and Italian grandmother.)
