Wall Finishes as an Art Form

When creating a space. designers use lighting, furniture, draperies and to a larger or lesser degree (depending on the client)  art in its many forms. Paintings, sculpture and other items typically chosen simply because the object itself is beautiful and strikes a chord with the client.

But what about the walls? We read where walls, floors and architectural elements are considered the foundation of a room.  For walls, often a paint chart is consulted and a compatible color picked.  This isn’t a bad thing, but it tends to sell the room short of reaching its creative potential.

When we are doing the many and varied custom plaster finishes we create for clients, we take the view that what we are doing is in fact an art form. A paint job will never be able to create the feel, mood, depth and dimension one of these finishes can create. It’s like the difference between a TV with one speaker vs. surround sound or a compact car vs. a luxury sedan. Done properly, the walls can create the backdrop and demark the space, and at the same time give the viewer the  satisfaction one derives from viewing a fine tapestry or sculpture.

In our last newsletter we talked about a recent project we finished in Ruby Hill. (See Ametista Ciello and also the picture below.) This was a beautiful house throughout. The room we worked on was already flawlessly put together with beautiful furniture, draperies, pictures etc.  However, the client  wanted a room that created a completely different feel, a room that could transport the people in the space to a completely different place. We finished the job while our client was vacationing. We received a call the first day they were back. The client was sitting in the room, enjoying the space.   The look, mood and feel of the space change was so dramatic that she was literally stunned. That sort of reaction,  similar to the reaction one gets from viewing fine art, is what Molto Bene works to achieve on all our custom finishes.

So while one can create nice looks with paint, some glaze and even some out of the can Venetian plaster, by elevating the importance of the walls to that of an art form and integrating that into the overall planning the quality of communication from the space is greatly enhanced.
