Warm and Friendly

Our most recent project completion was once again in Ruby Hill, for clients we had already done a number of custom finishes for (dining room, sitting room, main hallway and entry way).  Our task this time was to come up with a special finish for the kitchen/family area.

Many people consider kitchens the most important room in the home. These days, most homes have a substantial area set aside for the kitchen and family areas since this is the space most used - families spend the majority of their time here, eating, relaxing, TV, reading etc. For this project, we needed to come up with a finish that would be unique in itself but also tie well to the other spaces we had done plaster finishes in. It also had to be warm (in the yellow family) and work well with existing flooring, cabinetry, etc. We also had to come up with a complementary color for the adjacent hallway that would warm and liven that area up without distracting from the main room.

Through the sampling process, we came up with a plaster that was grainy yet allowed us to trowel it on fairly smooth with some nice movement. Color wise we injected a healthy dose of medium yellow, with some burnt umber and a smidge of burnt sienna (red). These colors gave us our warm yellow yet softened a bit to tie into the wood elements. Yellow is a tricky color to work with as it can go from being too pale to too gaudy pretty quickly. Usually influencing it with one or more other pigments allows you to get the warmth and richness while softening it.

Finish of the Month - Sanzari

We’ve decided to call this finish “Sanzari” in honor of our clients. We define a “Sanzari” finish as one that is warm, friendly and inviting, which perfectly describes this space and also would describe our clients. We’ve now done 5 different spaces in their home with great success.  What has been particularly rewarding is doing a number of different finishes and having a harmonious transition from room to room.

For the ceilings and the hallway, we had to get rid of the orange peel texture found in most newer homes, since this texture did not relate well to the new walls. We skimmed these areas with a bit of movement and painted them out in complementary colors that we customized to tie everything together.

Questions on Custom Plaster Finishes?

Clients, designers and contractors often have a hard time describing what we do to others. We’ve been doing this for years and sometimes it’s even hard for us to get across what we do, which is why we try to provide pictures, newsletters, samples etc. The point is you aren’t expected to know all the ins and outs of this product and service. If you are a designer architect or even homeowner who has questions about these type of finishes, how they compare to faux, other finishes or other products feel free to call or email us and we’d be glad to answer any questions you have. We do great work and we know our stuff. And if  you have a project you would like us to look at, we’d be more than happy to provide an estimate.
