painting tips
May 2006, Volume

Spring has sprung and the rain has
stopped!
Sorry, we are resending, because we
saw that information about the size of rollers and brushes somehow got deleted,
which would have made this confusing.
Here are a
few paint tips for your spring remodeling.
We have done numerous
issues on paints and applications. Here is some information on tools.
Brushes
 | Do
not use cheap brushes. If you are going to do any amount of painting, get
some good brushes. Purdy is well known and can be gotten at paint stores and
Home Depot. |
 | Get
the right size brush or multiple brushes for the work involved. |
 | For
windows and trim get a sash angle brush, usually 2 inches will do the
trick. |
 | If
you have to paint doors, you can use a tray and a weenie roller (small
roller, looks about the size of a hot dog). You roll the paint on the
surface with the roller and use your trim brush to “lay it off”
meaning run the length of it with the brush smoothing it out. Makes for a
fast efficient way to paint doors. |
 | You
can use a 2 inch or a slightly larger 2 and a half inch or 3 inch angle for cutting in
walls and ceilings, these hold more paint for those surfaces. |
 | Bigger
brushes are for bigger applications, such as painting the sides of house
that you can’t spray or roll. In that case pick a brush size that is
comfortable in your hand and will not tire you out too fast. You can get a
4-inch brush, which will hold a lot of paint but has a larger handle and
is heavier. After a few hours using that size brush can be wearing, so get
one that will fill the bill. |
 | Get
an artist brush for touching up little areas you can’t reach with a
regular brush without making a mess. |
Rollers
 | Most
walls have texture on them, so plan on using three quarter inch roller, which is a
little thicker but will hold more paint and allow you to get it into all the
crevices of the texture. |
 | For
smoother surfaces use a half inch roller. |
 | For
smaller areas such as a bathroom you can use a weenie roller, which also
comes in different sizes. |
 | Note
-- be careful in using a roller with oil paint. Oil paint is meant to be
applied with very smooth rollers. Hairs from the roller can come off into
your paint and into the surface you are painting. |
 | As
with the brushes don’t get cheapo rollers. Wooster and Purdy are good
quality and most paint stores have quality rollers - the extra buck or two
is worth it. |
Cleaning
 | If you spend money on a brush, do not leave it laying around in the sun, if you are not working with it for a
while keep it in the paint or cover it so it doesn’t get hard. |
 | When
done you clean it till it rinses clear with no paint residue. This way it
will stay soft and flexible. |
 | Brushes
come with a cover. When you are
done cleaning the brush, put
the cover back on so it stays straight and the tip doesn’t get munched. |
Good paint tools make a
big difference in doing a quality job and make it easier on you.
