Traveling Southwest

Our most recent project was a challenging one. Our clients live in the Woodside Hills. They have a passion for all things southwest and spend a lot of time in New Mexico. They also have a large collection of tapestries, pictures and Indian artifacts from the area. Their ideal was to transform their home here so that it had the look and feel of a Southwest home. Not having spent much time there personally, this presented a creative challenge. We had to do our homework on this. The clientswere able to provide some pictures and magazines, as well as wood, carpet and tile samples. We created samples using a plaster with a heavier consistency than a Venetian.  We created some trowel movement, as well as impressing some dried plaster bits throughout. The colorants we used were raw umber seasoned with some burnt umber and raw sienna. This particular plaster accepts color and diffuses it more to get a much softer subtle look. We used the same colorants but a slightly lighter version for the hallway and stairs. The finish was done through the master bedroom and bath, hallways stairwell to the first floor, entry halls and living room. We then waxed it to give it a low luster and to give some added protection. As an added note, we also removed the door trims and plastered right up to the doors to give a more authentic look. We didn’t plaster the ceilings, instead opting to use a Navajo white color to tie into the finish while still providing enough light throughout. The overall effect was striking and the clients were ecstatic, exclaiming that they felt they were in the southwest, and that we had given them their dream home. Overall a very fun project and a nice look
